It's Black Maternal Health Week and grassroots cam

It's Black Maternal Health Week and grassroots campaign group @fivexmore are making April Advocacy month as they continue to fight for better maternal outcomes for Black women. Their tireless work has payed off significantly, with black maternal mortality being discussed within the mainstream media. They're now they're preparing to debate in parliament on 19th April with their petition gaining over 187,000 signatures. When it comes to maternity, the language a care provider uses is so important, impactful and can transform someone's birthing and parenting experience. It is so important we're careful and considered, and so not disempowering people with language imbued with negative connotation or that is too jargon-y for non-medical people to understand.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As humans we tend to remember how someone made us feel via the use of language, and we believe that cesarean birth is just that, a birth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For those we are supporting, this is especially important as most people we support have non-dominant English. Navigating a cesarean birth within an unknown maternity system in a different country or city can be a daunting and isolating experience for anyone. Wether the cesarean is elective or not, we know that the way information is relayed significantly alters how mamas can feel. As Mother Companions, we hold space to unpack information and ensure parents make choices from an informed place, rather than agreeing through lack of understanding, systematic pressure or fear. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Amidst what's a challenging time for so many, this week we're showing gratitude for doulas as part of #WorldDoulaWeek. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

These wondrous and wise beings bring vital support to mamas throughout the childbirth year, bringing back the sacred and traditional practices back to birth.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The word 'doula' was given new life in 1969 by anthropologist Dr. Dana Raphael, who, along with her contemporary, Dr. Michel Odent, knew that in order to challenge dominant (and sometimes harmful) medical ideology, those having babies need person-focused support, safety and a well-held space as she births new life in to this world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although we're not exclusively a doula project, many doulas volunteer with us to walk alongside displaced mamas so they can make empowered choices about how they want their birth to be against a rising tide of hostility. We know that this nurturing solidarity is a necessity, not a luxury. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Expectant mothers, especially those who have had traumatic experiences, can have more positive birth outcomes with the consistent and compassionate support of a doula by her side.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We know that people in desperate situations take desperate measures to find safety. How people travel to the UK should not dictate the outcome of their asylum claims. What Priti Patel proposes today stands not only against human decency but contravenes the Geneva Convention which protects those fleeing conflict. it absolves our responsibility in the UK to protect refugees and instead puts them in extreme danger.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Another lil’ baby birthed by her mama safely earthside. The incredible Janaki, gave birth last week and is now safely home with the new addition to her family. Like many of the mamas we support, Janaki had an exceptionally challenging journey with this pregnancy, however her birth story is one one beauty. Janaki said, ‘as soon as he was born I knew he was fine. As soon as they put him on my chest, I was like ‘ahhhh’! We love hearing of that powerful oxytocin rush and of the strong bond between mama and baby. Congratulations, Mama! xx⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The 2017 Cochrane report recommends continuous support during labour and childbirth can improve a number of outcomes for both the mama and baby. It found that:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

- Postpartum depression can be lower in women who were supported well in labour⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 39% decrease in the chance of a caesarean birth ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Shorter labours⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low Apgar score (used to asses babies health and well-being at the birth and shortly afterwards)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- 31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We’ve been able to ensure no mama gives birth alone and displaced women have the compassionate specialist support and companionship they need throughout pregnancy, birth & early parenthood. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Over this last week we have welcomed two new little ones birthed by resillient mamas, but their entrance to the world is bittersweet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These two mamas have given birth to two tiny babies knowing they have no home to return to once they leave the delivery suite.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These mamas are displaced through no fault of their own; fleeing human trafficking and having had their asylum case rejected by the Home Office.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Housing red-tape and bureaucracy leave little wiggle room for the unique and hyper-vulnerable circumstances the mothers we support find themselves in, through no fault of their own.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We know that the system is failing vulnerable mothers. Every mother should have the right to safe and appropriate accommodation, the space to rest, nest and settle in with her new babe without feeling endangered or carrying substantial anxiety about where she'll end up.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We're doing our best to speak these experiences to those in power locally so no mama faces these challenges, but we've a long road ahead of us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We're grateful to our incredible Mother Companions who work tirelessly with mamas alongside the wider Bristol refugee support network, notably our partners @Unseenuk and @BristolRefugeeRights. Together we're doing our best to ensure appropriate and safe accommodation is secured.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Although things look different now, our Mother Companions (although almost unrecognisable without their broomsticks) uphold an ancient tradition of birthing wisdom, holistic healing, and provide a radical nurturing to expectant mamas, beyond that which borders try to disrupt. We listen to diasporic practices, sharing interwoven wisdom, learning and celebrating the significance that lay birth attendants bring pan-culturally. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Mother Companions are unconditional support, the nurturing friend, the person that leaves food on a door step, holds baby while a mother sleeps, ensures she can drink a cup of tea whilst it's still hot - it's Mother Companions that contribute so much to our village, they gather to support and care for someone birthing and raising children against the odds.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Since the dawn of recorded history, being a Wise Woman has been a subversive act. In this age of hostility and government- sanctioned discrimination towards those seeking safety, the nurturing support Mother Companions provide, too, is a radical act. We tip our pointed hats to you, wondrous beings! Mother Companions *are* Project MAMA.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
